I paint with acrylics on watercolor paper, using the process of layering the paint and scratching back to reveal unique colors and textures in my paintings.

 

A Triad of Mermaids. I most often paint in doubles, I think because of having an identical twin but this time around I thought is would be a fun challenge do a painting of three mermaids joyfully swimming in the ocean on a full moon night enjoying the extra light. I wanted to use a darker palette than I usually do. I looked at Henri Matisse’s painting, Dance which shows five nude women dancing while holding hands for inspiration. I like the composition, the mermaids form a equilateral triangle, with the circle expanding within, it’s powerful and direct.

This is my fifth mermaid painting. Here’s what I wrote in an earlier post on why I’ve painted them:

When I was younger I loved the idea and stories of mermaids, perhaps because my twin sister and I swam all summer long and  felt at home under water. Once I started snorkeling and saw the beauty of the tropical fish and coral, I could easily imagine mermaids swimming about. With the earth  having three quarters of it’s surface covered in water, it makes sense that cultures around the world have myths of mermaids. In general, mermaids are  portrayed as beautiful, mysterious and powerful creatures.
